Chapter Fourteen

Cole

“Damned angel.”

I muttered under my breath, trailing my fingers through the very last drop of demon blood remaining on the kitchen table. It was convenient for me, of course, that the Hell creature living in disguise alongside Charlotte had been killed, but I had wanted to be the one to do it. That, and now I didn’t know which creature had been killed, who had dared to step out of line with what my clan ordered.

I supposed I could always nip back down to Hell and figure it out, there was usually someone taking note of which creatures were unfortunately eliminated while out and about in the human world, but I didn’t want to waste a trip down there. It wasn’t that important to me to figure it out, not now that the creature was dead anyway.

Besides, if I showed up in Hell without the girl, there would only be a thousand meetings as I debriefed the clan on all of the information that I collected and even more meetings to discuss strategy. No, I wouldn’t be doing that. The next time I went back down to Hell, Charlotte would be coming with me.

Tilting my head up slightly, I sniffed at the air. It was heady, Charlotte’s distinctive scent much stronger now. The aroma was almost indescribable, a seductive mixture of florals and vanilla and power. The scent betrayed just how much strength someone would receive by bringing Charlotte to their clan. And this wasn’t even at its full intensity.

No wonder the angel always made sure he was there the second she transformed. Even a minute at her full power out in the open, and she would no doubt be snatched up by some passing creature that was in the right place at the right time or one of the many creatures that were bound to be stalking her by this point.

Letting out a sigh, I stepped slowly into Charlotte’s room. I hadn’t expected to find much in there, and my suspicions were confirmed when I peaked in the door. Tousled bed clothes, discarded washcloths, and an overturned chair littered the space.

They must have left in a hurry.

I wondered if that meant the transformation was just beginning or still in progress. I doubted that it was over completely. If it was, I’d be able to scent out which direction the angel took her. As it was, the trail led me from her dorm room to a parking lot, but it was lost beyond that. There was no way she was at her full strength yet.

I frowned, deciding to check around campus some more. I hadn’t been able to trace down where the angel was staying yet, but I knew it had to be around here somewhere. He wouldn’t be too far from Charlotte, not with things happening like this.

Stepping out of the abandoned dorm, I shut the door firmly behind me and took off down the stairs. Even now and then, I caught whiffs of Charlotte’s scent that made my heart flutter, but I chalked it up to anticipation.
